Quantum AI is viewed by many as the future of artificial intelligence. This intersection of AI and quantum computing has the potential to create technological breakthroughs that would transform industries from healthcare to education. 

So how could this cutting-edge technology benefit your business? Let’s look at what Quantum AI is, its relationship to quantum computing, and practical ways business owners could use it in the future.  

## What is Quantum AI? 

Quantum AI is an early-stage technology that merges the power of quantum computing with artificial intelligence. Quantum computing could supercharge AI's capabilities by removing limitations caused by data size, complexity, and how long it takes to solve problems.  

Traditional AI uses algorithms to analyze data, make predictions, and automate tasks. Quantum computing uses principles of quantum mechanics to process information at unprecedented speeds. Combining the two creates the potential to solve complex problems at speeds currently unheard of. 

Where does this speed come from? Quantum computers achieve it by using quantum bits (or qubits) to operate. In classical computing, a bit is the smallest unit of digital information. It can have one of two values, either 0 or 1, and is the basic building block of computing systems.  

A quantum bit is the basic unit of information in quantum computing. Qubits can occupy a third value known as a superposition, which is a fundamental concept in quantum mechanics. A superposition can represent a value of 0, 1, and all the positions in between taken at once, existing in multiple states simultaneously. 

The difference in computing power between a traditional bit and a quantum bit is enormous. Calculations that a classical computer would need millions of years to solve, qubits could perform in minutes. 

### Who owns Quantum AI? 

No single entity “owns” Quantum AI outright. It is an open field of research and development. However, Quantum AI development is currently dominated by major tech companies such as Google, IBM and Microsoft, as well as startups focused on quantum technologies. Still, collaboration between these private companies, academic institutions, and governments is crucial for advancing this technology. 

While Quantum AI is in its infancy, quantum computing power is increasingly accessible. Several tech giants now offer quantum computing as a service, meaning businesses and researchers can harness the power of quantum computing without having to build and maintain their own quantum systems. This allows organizations of all sizes to experiment with quantum technology and work toward developing Quantum AI capabilities. 

## What can Quantum AI be used for? 

While Quantum AI applications are limited today, the ability to analyze vast amounts of data at super speeds would have a huge impact on virtually every industry. Here are a few examples: 

**1. Quantum Farming**

Quantum AI could transform the agriculture industry by making it significantly more sustainable and cost-effective. With quantum algorithms analyzing environmental data, farmers could more accurately predict crop yields, optimize resource allocation, and make precise decisions to optimize outputs. 

**2. Quantum and Cyber Security Use Cases** 

Quantum AI will create new [cybersecurity](https://www.vivatechnology.com/news/comprehensive-guide-to-identification-and-prevention-in-cybersecurity) challenges and opportunities for businesses by amplifying the ability to both attack and defend systems. Quantum computers can quickly solve complex encryption codes, putting data at risk. But Quantum AI could also be used to develop more secure encryption protocols that are resistant to quantum attacks. Companies will need to stay ahead of the cybersecurity curve to protect their sensitive data.  

**3. Climate Change** 

The fight against climate change would get a huge leg up from Quantum AI. This is thanks to its potential to optimize operations in industries that are major greenhouse gas producers. Quantum AI would be a powerful tool for optimizing energy allocation, agricultural practices, manufacturing techniques, and supply chains. This would be great for businesses’ bottom lines, and for reducing their carbon footprints. 

Quantum AI could also help create more accurate climate change predictions and map out the likely effects. Better models and information means better strategies to mitigate the negative impacts.

With Quantum AI, personalized learning experiences would be accessible to a far greater number of people than currently. These models could analyze student data to create individualized chat tutors, tailored learning plans, and AI-powered educational tools. ## What will Quantum AI be used for in the future? 

There is a lot of excitement over the future of Quantum AI, but we probably can’t even imagine what that future will really look like. As William Hurley, CEO of the quantum computing software startup Strangeworks, [said](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UAE-Uel3gY) on the VivaTech stage, “_These machines don’t represent a faster way to do the problems we have today. They represent a way to create completely new calculations to solve completely new problems that we have not even dreamed of._” 

In the future we can imagine, there are several specific uses that are generating the most buzz. Here are four cases where Quantum AI is expected to make a significant impact:  

**1. Drug Discovery and Healthcare** 

One of the most exciting applications of Quantum AI is in drug discovery and personalized medicine. Quantum AI could accelerate the production of new drugs, leading to breakthroughs in treating diseases that have long been incurable. It would do this by simulating complex chemical reactions with unprecedented speed and accuracy, enabling researchers to identify potential drug candidates more efficiently. This would revolutionize human health and could even lead to therapies tailored to individual patients. 

**2. Financial Services** 

Data is the lifeblood of the financial sector, and Quantum AI could analyze market data while considering countless variables simultaneously. Japan has pushed the boundaries of technology, showcasing its disruptive innovations. The [current startup](https://carnegieendowment.org/2023/02/01/people-powering-japan-s-startup-ecosystem-pub-88924) ecosystem has the capability to attract the greatest talents and foster the growth of startups at a scale that was unimaginable fifteen years ago. 

## Young Minds Are the Future
In recent years Japan’s startup ecosystem has flourished thanks to elite university graduates. Since the [early 1990s](https://www.statista.com/statistics/895274/japan-university-based-startup-number-by-major-university/), with the crash of the economic bubble and the subsequent slow economic growth with several recessions, there has been a gradual structural shift which has contributed to building a better environment for establishing ventures in Japan. A new era of young entrepreneurs who grew up in Japan emerged. 

The Japanese [government](https://carnegieendowment.org/2023/02/01/people-powering-japan-s-startup-ecosystem-pub-88924), such as [JETRO](https://www.jetro.go.jp/en/) (Japan External Trade Organization), played a role in supporting young entrepreneurs by promoting collaborations between startups and larger firms. Startups not only became potential future ventures but also viable partners. Established companies changed their perspective, viewing startups not as an investment but recognizing their value as potential tech partners to enhance their core business.

As of November 2022, Japan has created [11 unicorns](https://www.statista.com/statistics/1096928/number-of-global-unicorns-by-country/). The Japanese government in collaboration with the private sector and universities have actively participated in the establishment of regional startup hubs. The collective startup ecosystem rose a record-breaking [877.4 billion yen](https://www.statista.com/topics/4744/startups-in-japan/#topicOverview) in funding in 2022.


## Leading Tech Sectors in Japan
### IT and Software Services 
Japan hosts a significant IT industry with the software industry alone generating nearly [16.7 trillion](https://www.statista.com/statistics/1227316/japan-software-sector-sales-value/) yen in sales starting from 2020. Recent developments have intensified the demand for computer-based solutions, increasing the importance of the Japanese IT industry. Companies are adopting technologies like cloud services to improve business operations generating strong growth in the cloud platform services market.  The IT industry plays a crucial role in both the economy and realizing the government's vision of a society where cyberspace and the physical world are closely connected. This idea was initially presented in [2016](https://www.statista.com/topics/7755/it-industry-in-japan/) as part of the Fifth Science and Technology Basic Plan by the Council for Science, Technology, and Innovation (CSTI).

### Artificial Intelligence
Japan has increased patent applications for artificial intelligence in [recent years](https://www.statista.com/statistics/1220624/japan-number-of-artificial-intelligence-related-patent-applications/). AI is seen as a big deal for the country’s future. The government thinks AI is vital for [Society 5.0](https://www.statista.com/topics/8396/artificial-intelligence-in-japan/#topicOverview). 

Society 5.0, or the Super Smart Society, envisions a future shaped by a 2016 Japanese government initiative, aiming to seamlessly integrate advanced technologies like artificial intelligence into society. Companies in areas like electronics and automotive are researching AI, especially for self-driving cars and industrial automatization. 

### Robotics 
Japan [leads](https://internationalfinance.com/magazine/technology-magazine/japans-robots-are-conquering-the-world/) the world in robotics, housing seven of the top 10 industrial robotics companies. 
It has the highest density of robot workers globally and excels in machine vision, machine learning, and AI.  Japan leads in industrial robotics, being the top exporter in terms of both shipments and the number of operating units for robots.

## Notable Japanese Startups in the Tech Industry 
Startups are at the core of the tech industry in Japan. Several remarkable startups have made their mark not only in Japan but internationally as well. 
- [Connected Robotics](https://connected-robotics.com/en/), founded in 2014, is an AI/robot controller development business. They are implementing automation and innovating the food industry. They want to increase efficiency and support the workforce by integrating robotics, image processing, and AI technologies in our products and services. 
- [LeapMind](https://leapmind.io/en/), founded in 2012, specializes in developing deep-learning solutions for embedded devices such as Efficiera, a lightweight model ideal for edge devices like security cameras. 
- [Mercari](https://www.mercari.com/), established in 2013, has evolved into a prominent e-commerce platform valued at nearly half a billion dollars, with global offices.

## Opening Up In Asia
In the realm of international business, startups encounter unique hurdles related to market entry, understanding diverse consumer behaviors, and navigating regulatory landscapes that vary from one country to another.

Huawei France is helping French startups tackle these international hurdles for the Asian market with their Digital InPulse program. 2023 marks the 10-year anniversary of this program that offers winning startups a learning expedition to Southern China,a spot to exhibit at VivaTech, and supports their international development.

## Finding Funding in Africa
Even with increasing interest from investors, African entrepreneurs often find it difficult to secure the funding needed to expand. Through initiatives like the AfricaTech Awards, VivaTech and the IFC aim to create new opportunities for tech companies that are having a transformational impact across Africa and help them gain visibility among global investors. 

One of this year’s winners has already closed a new funding round. 2023 winner of the Healthtech award, Waspito, [raised](https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7133365066241839104/) an additional $2.5 million this fall, extending its seed round to $5.2 million.

Last year’s winner of the Climate Tech award, WEEE Center, was able to [set up](https://www.vivatechnology.com/news/how-startup-challenges-kickstart-growth#:~:text=Bonnie%20M.%20Mbithi%2C%20CEO%20of%20WEEE%20Centre%2C%C2%A0winner%20of%20the%202022%20Climate%20Tech%20category.%C2%A0) six new centers across the country to act as pre-processing centers for electronic waste collection in Kenya.

## Promoting Partnerships in the US
The United States [remains](https://www.startupblink.com/blog/top-20-countries-by-total-startup-output-in-2023/#:~:text=The%20United%20States%20maintains%20its,the%20total%20startup%20output%20rankings.) the leading country for startup output in 2023. With enormous amounts of competition locally, American startups often choose to find international partnerships and research market potential abroad. Europe is one of the first expansion routes they explore.

In return, European businesses profit from proven innovative solutions from these startups. For example, this [partnership](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKDhmENcKto) between Boston Dynamics and Paris’ transport operator RATP that blossomed after their meeting at VivaTech 2021. The startup’s mechanical robot is able to inspect underground galleries, which are quite difficult to access and dangerous for RATP employees.

## A Borderless Tech Ecosystem
The notion that innovation knows no borders is a testament to the potential that arises when startups and businesses collaborate on a global scale, using their collective creativity to shape the future.

The deal is a $130 billion plan to create over 1.9 million jobs by 2025. Based on two central policies, it will train 100,000 people in new technologies, make 140,000 sets of state data public, and offer unemployment insurance for many workers. The two new investment plans offer huge opportunities for entrepreneurs.The Republic of Korea is also home to large tech companies that contribute to the overall innovation economy.
