Even an excellent product can only succeed if people will buy it. That’s the core message of the product-market fit concept. Achieving product-market fit is crucial for any startup and signals a product’s potential to thrive.

This guide breaks down what product-market fit is, the steps to validate it, and how to measure it successfully.

## Defining Product-Market Fit
At its most simple definition, product-market fit is when a product fulfills a strong market demand. The product-market fit concept was developed, and the term coined, by venture capitalist Andy Rachleff. 

Rachleff was inspired by the legendary venture capitalist and Sequoia Capital founder Don Valentine, who insisted that the market had to be the first consideration of entrepreneurs. “My position has always been: you find a great market and you build multiple companies in that market,” Valentine said.

Rachleff argues that while a product itself and a company’s team can be changed, a market is fixed. Therefore, product-market fit can only happen when you develop a product to meet the needs and desires of the customers that make up a market.

The 40% rule is a simple way to gauge product-market fit. Also known as the “Sean Ellis Test” after its creator, the rule states that if at least 40% of surveyed customers say they would be “very disappointed” if they could no longer use the product, it indicates a strong product-market fit.

The number 40% was determined by comparing the results of hundreds of startups that conducted this survey. Startups with at least 40% of customers responding “very disappointed” were able to build high-growth business models. Startups with survey results below 40% had a hard time remaining viable.

### An Example of a Market Fit Hypothesis
A market fit hypothesis is an educated assumption about how your product will solve a specific customer need.

For a company developing a fitness tracking app, a hypothesis could be: "Young professionals aged 25-40 want a fitness app that provides a variety of quick, customized workout routines that fit into a busy schedule, along with real-time feedback and community features to keep them engaged."

A market fit hypothesis like this helps a startup begin to define and validate its target market’s needs.

## Key Activities in Validating Product-Market Fit

Confirming product-market fit requires user data and feedback, so a product needs to be tested in a market before it can be validated. Product-market fit often takes place during the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) stage, when early product designs are tested. But it is an iterative process involving repeated testing and feedback, and therefore truly achieving product-market fit can take years.

Key activities for validating product-market fit:

1. **Define Your Target Market**: Start by understanding who your ideal customers are and their challenges. Research market demographics and demands, and customer behavior. Surveying potential users can help refine customer personas.

2. **Conduct Market Research**: Analyze market reports, industry trends, and competitors’ products to ensure your product aligns with market demands or gaps.

3. **Build an MVP**: Develop a Minimum Viable Product to test your hypothesis. This should be a simple version of your product that still delivers your core value proposition.

4. **Collect User Feedback and Metrics**: Use analytics and surveys to gather user data and learn from their behavior. Early adopters, the first and most enthusiastic users of your product, can provide especially valuable insight into which features resonate and what can be improved.

5. **Iterate and Improve**: Use that customer feedback to refine and enhance your product. Repeat this process as many times as needed to hone in on your product-market fit.

6. **Assess Customer Satisfaction**: Tools like Net Promoter Score (NPS) surveys give you insight into customer satisfaction levels, helping you confirm if your product meets their needs.

While there are many steps in finding product-market fit, these three are especially critical:

1. **Pinpoint Your Core Value Proposition**: Determine what specifically makes your product valuable to users. A core value proposition should answer the question, “Why should a user choose my product over a competitor?”

2. **User Feedback Loops**: Collect, analyze, and act on customer feedback over and over to align your product features with real user needs.

3. **Data-Based Iteration**: Never assume or guess what your users need. Products that evolve based on data such as user behavior and feedback are more likely to achieve product-market fit.

Ask your users these questions about product satisfaction, relevance, and improvement to assess the status of your current product-market fit:

Slack is a case where pivoting was key to achieving product-market fit. Initially, Slack was developed as an internal communications tool for a game development company. However, the team realized its value as a tool to centralize workplace communications and released it publicly. Slack’s market fit indicators included strong user engagement, viral corporate growth, and high adoption rates.

Airbnb struggled in its early iterations, but once the founders found the right users – travelers looking for affordable and unique accommodations – it quickly gained traction. After listening to customer feedback, Airbnb created an easy way to book private homes, a feature that was missing in the travel accommodations market. Airbnb tested its concept in a small market first and then expanded after product-market fit was validated.

Zoom experienced seemingly overnight success due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but the company had already recognized a gap in the video conferencing market. VivaTech concluded two weeks ago, but the buzz is still hanging around in the VivaTech headquarters. During the event, we interviewed numerous startups and heard their fascinating stories and groundbreaking ideas. 

Our editors selected the ten most innovative startups from different parts of the world. From AI applications to healthcare solutions, each innovation has the potential to make a significant impact on its industry and beyond.

## Aectual
Hans Vermeulen, Co-founder and CEO of [Aectual](http://aectual.com/), founded the company in 2017. Aectual uses waste materials and large-scale 3D printers to create circular interiors and brand experiences for clients like Nike, BMW, and Tiffany & Co. Based in Amsterdam, the company offers digital generative models for seamless custom designs. 

Vermeulen attended VivaTech for the first time as a contender for this year’s LVMH Innovation Award and ended up winning in the category for Sustainability and Greentech. The startup’s CEO aimed to connect with LVMH Group maisons and expand Aectual's network. “One word [for VivaTech] is massive. We love doing big things. I hope to come back next year and maybe 3D print some of the booths!”

## Wingcopter
German drone delivery company, [Wingcopter](https://wingcopter.com/), specializes in transportation of medical supplies to remote areas. Founded in 2017, they’ve already grown to a team of 150, including almost 80 engineers. Initially, they relied on bootstrapping until securing venture capital funding, totaling around 100 million euros. 

Thomas Dreiling, the Communications Manager at Wingcopter, shared about their journey exhibiting in the Smart City & Mobility Park at VivaTech. "This is our first time at VivaTech, and it's been fantastic. Our goal is to scale globally, and VivaTech has been instrumental in networking and boosting visibility. It's been exhausting but incredibly productive. We're here seeking more investors, partners, and customers. We're eager to see where these connections lead and hope to return in the future!”

## Scentronix
Frederik Duerinck, founder and CEO of [Scentronix](http://www.scentronix.com), develops algorithmic perfumery under the brand Every Human. Duerinck started Scentronix in 2018 by re-mortgaging his house and securing initial investments from Silicon Valley and IFF. Despite facing financial challenges and the impact of COVID-19, the company began generating revenue two years ago and is now rapidly expanding globally.

At VivaTech, Scentronix exhibited for the first time. Frederik highlighted the team's passion and the shared experiences among startup founders as key takeaways from the event. “There are so many startups that have fantastic ideas here. There are so many jewels to find and four days is almost too short to discover all that VivaTech has.”

## Bhout
Salvador Barros, Head of Growth at [Bhout](https://www.bhout.com/), introduced the company's innovative product at VivaTech: the world's first intelligent boxing bag designed to gamify fitness and keep people physically active longer. This debut at VivaTech garnered substantial user feedback and media attention.

Bhout was founded in 2019, originating from Lisbon with its fitness boutique concept, and plans to expand in Iberia and potentially enter the U.S. market. The company started with seven employees and now has twenty, having faced challenges in raising funds and product development but remaining optimistic about scaling. “VivaTech for us was very important for the first feedback from users. It’s also a lot about brand exposure, visibility, and media. The first day we had already 15 media passing by. It’s been way beyond our expectations."

## Artpoint
Founded in 2019 by digital art enthusiasts Laurie Bonin and Julie Corver, [Artpoint](https://www.artpoint.fr/fr) aims to democratize digital art in public spaces. Their model supports digital artists by enhancing visibility and creating new revenue streams. Initially, educating people about the benefits of digital art was challenging.

Vienna Kim, the Artistic Manager at Artpoint, marked her third visit to VivaTech, where the startup consistently showcases its innovative services. Vienna shared a success story about partnering with Les 4 Temps, a Parisian shopping center, to install artistic content on an anamorphic screen, an opportunity that came from a meeting at last year’s VivaTech. “VivaTech is hands down one of the most important events for ArtPoint. We really do put so much preparation into VivaTech every single year. As there is a very important market here, we need to stand out from the competition.”

## Pollen
[Pollen](https://heypollen.com), a French startup, was founded in 2022 by Julie Ranty, and has a special place in our hearts as she was the former Managing Director of VivaTech! Pollen specializes in delivering expert-led training sessions to help today’s talents grow and learn constantly. With small groups, Pollen is changing the way employees upskill and learn new skills, all within one day sessions. 

Robin Monchauzou, Head of Sales at Pollen shared how VivaTech has been a game-changer for their visibility and business development. “VivaTech is a great opportunity to develop your notoriety. It's also a really unique place to meet everybody in the ecosystem at the same time.”

## Xydrobe
Nelloid Lloyd Malcolm is the Co-founder, and CEO of [Xydrobe](https://xydrobe.com/), an immersive advertising network, which creates multi-sensory VR spaces for brands to showcase their content. Based in the UK, Xydrobe partners with notable brands like Harrods to offer unique VR experiences. The startup has experienced significant growth since its founding in 2022, including the recent launch of a 20-person VR cinema. Nelloid emphasizes that VR provides a powerful, engaging experience without requiring consumers to invest in expensive equipment.

Attending VivaTech for the first time, she praised the event for offering valuable networking opportunities and generating significant leads. “I wouldn't be surprised if VivaTech made up the majority of our sales this year, to be honest.” Nelloid envisions expanding Xydrobe’s network globally and sees immersive media as essential for future advertising.

## Triplet
Jake Dongwha Shin is the CEO of [Triplet](https://www.triplllet.com/en/), a startup from South Korea that provides AI solutions for offline stores. The company began eight years ago when Jake, leveraging his experience in analyzing online user behavior, recognized the need for similar analysis in physical stores. Triplet integrates their AI with clients' CCTV systems to analyze customer behavior, including movement, age, gender, and product preferences. This data enables clients to enhance service, products, displays, and marketing strategies and primarily serves fashion and retail brands.

Jake envisions Triplet becoming a leading data company for offline data, comparable to Google. He found attending events like VivaTech valuable for connecting with luxury brands, which could lead to future collaborations. “There are so many good companies attending this year. You meet the most powerful brands and retailers in Europe.”

## Pave Motors 
Nicolaus Nagel is the Co-founder of [Pave Motors](https://www.pavemotors.com/), an electric motorbike manufacturer based in Brooklyn. Founded in 2019, Pave Motors aims to bridge the gap between e-bikes and e-motorbikes by creating lightweight yet exhilarating vehicles. Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, they have successfully transitioned their concept into production, with plans for expansion across the US and Europe in the coming years.

At VivaTech, Nicolaus loved getting to interact with potential clients and appreciated the positive feedback he received. “Attending VivaTech really gave us the confidence that the bikes fit super well into France and Europe overall.”

## Primaa
Fanny Sockeel is the CEO of [Primaa](https://primaalab.com/), a startup operating in oncology. Founded six years ago, Primaa focuses on developing tools to assist pathologists in cancer diagnosis. Their journey has involved collaboration between doctors, mathematicians, and business experts, resulting in tailored solutions for pathologists. The startup hopes to continue expanding its tools to cover various organs and leveraging AI to predict disease progression. 

This was Fanny’s first time at VivaTech and she explained how the event played a crucial role in connecting Primaa with policymakers and generating public interest in their solution. “It was so amazing to meet everybody here, especially with politicians because we want to show them what we do and they can help us get reimbursed for our tools and so on.”

Sectors of **FinTech, E-commerce, Climate Tech, and Health Tech** are not only growing but will be on display at VivaTech this year through the top 9 finalists.

A total of [$1.4 billion](https://www.cnbcafrica.com/2023/the-rise-of-african-tech-hubs-how-they-are-becoming-the-silicon-valleys-of-the-continent/) was raised by African tech firms in the first nine months of 2023, with $492,418,000 raised in just the third quarter. The most significant funding goes to major startup hubs like Lagos, Nairobi, and Cape Town. However, obtaining funding remains challenging, especially for early-stage companies, as most of it comes from foreign investors.

As the industry continues its dynamic evolution, we are thrilled to unveil this year's AfricaTech Awards finalists and delve into their innovations: 

## FinTech & E-commerce Finalists
The number of users in Africa's e-commerce market is predicted to grow steadily between 2024 and 2029, adding an estimated [83.5 million](https://www.statista.com/statistics/1190579/number-of-online-shoppers-in-africa/) users and with a remarkable compound annual growth rate of 32%, Africa is the continent with the fastest rate of development in terms of [fintech](https://www.itweb.co.za/article/africas-fintech-market-expected-to-reach-65bn-by-2030/PmxVEMKEWG2vQY85) revenue worldwide.

**[agriBoRA](https://agribora.com/)**: With origins in Germany and Kenya, this agri-fin-tech startup aims to transform agriculture on the African continent. Farmers can access marketplaces and banking services through its platform, turning small agri-merchants into centers. To increase agricultural profitability, they provide services including input loans and crop monitoring with analytics and phone functions.

**[Inclusivity Solutions](http://www.inclusivitysolutions.com)**: Born in Cape Town, the company combines their digital insurance platform, ASPin, with open APIs, their solution allows distribution partners and insurers to enter the market quickly. They provide their partners with customized and ideal insurance products by offering specialist consumer, analytics, and statistical services.

**[SecondSTAX](https://secondstax.com/)**: By providing investment firms, the company founded in Ghana, with a centralized platform, they seek to streamline the African capital markets and make it easier for them to access high-growth equities throughout the continent. With their wealth of technological and financial market expertise, the SecondSTAX team is well-positioned to transform the African capital markets with financial technology solutions.  

## Climate Tech Finalists
Climate tech development is crucial for resilience. Despite global investment, African businesses received minimal [funding in 2020](https://startupbasecamp.org/climate-tech-africa-trends-challenges-and-opportunities/), yet the continent holds potential for green development and is rising in this sector. 

**[Schoolz](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.schoolz.io&hl=fr&gl=US)**: Founded in 2020, the company offers a secure platform for staff and student mobility. They provide subscription packages, outfitted buses, and real-time tracking to ensure punctual deliveries and to provide the best daily transportation service by putting customer comfort and safety first. Through ridesharing, users will not only be able to save money, but also decrease emissions from personal vehicles.

**[Hysper Tech](http://www.hyspertech.org)**:  Founded in 2017 in Zambia,  Hysper Youth Enterprise is a flexible cooperative organization that specializes in agroforestry operations. They are experts in planting trees that are essential for many uses, including energy production, poles, lumber, and soil enrichment, and in supplying nurseries for agro-forestry. 

**[Solar Dev](https://solardevbf.com/)**: Facilitates the development of solar energy infrastructure in Burkina Faso to support local businesses. They provide integrated financing solutions, covering the entire process from design to maintenance of solar power systems. This enables clients to access reliable and affordable green energy, reducing their carbon footprint and energy costs while supporting economic growth.

## Health Tech Finalists
Africa's healthcare industry suffers from resource and budget constraints, but technology offers chances to improve access to treatment. Driven by progress sparked by the pandemic, health technology in Africa is poised for [substantial](https://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/growth-opportunities-for-health-tech-in-africa-by-stephen-ogweno-2022-01) growth.

**[Rology](https://rology.health/)**: Established in 2017 in Egypt, Rology links hospitals throughout the world with certified radiologists. They provide effective MRI teleradiology services that guarantee accurate and quick diagnostic reports, preventing delays and enhancing patient care. To improve radiology services globally, initiatives including funding for education, teleradiology programs, and AI integration are being used. 

**[Thalia Psychotherapy](https://thalia.africa)**: Originally from Kenya, the company is incorporating mental health screening into triage and stationing specialists in all medical facilities. They are revolutionizing mental health treatment in Africa. This guarantees early detection and intervention, increasing everyone's access to and affordability of care.  

**[Zencey](https://www.zencey.com/)**: a business from Cote d'Ivoire supported by Techstars, utilizes telehealth, artificial intelligence, and well-designed health plans to increase the affordability and accessibility of quality healthcare for millions of uninsured individuals and workers in sub-Saharan Africa.

VivaTech established the Female Founder Challenge to celebrate women-led startups that are driving innovation in tech. The aim of the challenge is to enhance female representation, promote access to key roles, emphasize the value of diversity, and address women's underrepresentation in the industry.

In 2022, 94% of female-led startup fundraisings were under €15M, compared to €215M for males, and only 2% of global venture capital funding went to all-female founder teams, whereas 15% went to mixed-gender founding teams.

We are pleased to announce this year’s five finalists for the Female Founder Challenge, who have been selected to advance in the competition and attend VivaTech, taking place in Paris from May 22 to 25, 2024!

## Daria Stepanova Co-Founder and CEO of AIRMO

[Daria](https://www.linkedin.com/in/daria-stepanova-82068372/) has been immersed in satellite technology for years as an engineer, refining her skills at Sputnix, before she spent six years at German Orbital Systems, eventually rising to the position of Chief Technology Officer.

Daria had a vision:  to make a tangible impact on climate change. She co-founded [AIRMO](https://www.airmo.io/), a space tech startup for climate change, the company is leading the charge in climate action through satellite technology designed to monitor greenhouse gas emissions. AIRMO provides a comprehensive solution for real-time monitoring and analysis of methane and carbon dioxide emissions worldwide. Daria and her team’s work isn’t just about technology but about driving meaningful change for the planet.

[Bionirs](https://bionirs.com/) specializes in effectively and non-invasively identifying lesions for early breast cancer screening, while also providing metabolic information related to the type of lesion detected. This innovative approach not only enhances the emotional experience of receiving a breast cancer diagnosis but is also designed with the comfort of women in mind.

VivaTech speaks with Ilan Abehassera, the co-founder behind Origins Fund, and Matt Turck, a seasoned Partner at Firstmark Capital, as they share their insights on the startup ecosystem from an investor perspective. 

## Funding Meets Influence
Ilan Abehassera is an angel investor and co-founder of [Origins Fund](https://www.origins.fund/) with football world champion Blaise Matuidi. This early-stage venture firm is making waves in the investment world with its influence-based model.

Origin’s LPs are mostly athletes, celebrities, and investors with huge social media influence, think of football stars from PSG and Chelsea, or successful influential entrepreneurs from all over the world. The Fund uses the power of their influence to bring awareness and growth to the startups they invest in.

For a VC, there’s no lack of startups looking for funding. However, for Abehassera, the real struggle is finding scalable ones. Abehassera spoke on stage at VivaTech 2023 with Matuidi about their influence funding model and recently shared with us some insights from behind the scenes.

“So the first thing I did after going off the stage of VivaTech was actually to speak with entrepreneurs. In the 5 minutes following our talk on stage, I had maybe 25 different pitches and business cards in my pocket.”

“One piece of advice I would give to entrepreneurs trying to pitch VCs is first to make sure that their company is this VC fundable.

“What I mean by that is most companies are not going to have the trajectory that is expected from startups and eventually be worth hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars. And that's completely fine. But you need to know that early on to make sure that you do fit the bill with VCs looking to fund you.”

So, before running with your pitch deck in hand to investors, Abehassera suggests taking a moment to assess the scalability of your project and potential markets.

## Failing is Overrated
Matt Turk is a partner at [FirstMark Capital](https://firstmark.com/), a New York-based early-stage venture capital firm. Partnering with entrepreneurs who are focused on solving meaningful problems. A few notable investments they’ve made early on include Airbnb, Pinterest, Shopify, and Upwork.

We caught up with Turk in our recent [VivaTech Startup Meetup](https://www.vivatechnology.com/news/session-digest-scaling-globally-the-keys-to-success) in New York. As an investor, Turk often sees startups go through moments of ups and downs and even fail, but for him, it’s not always a good thing. 

“I think failure is overrated. There is a little bit of a culture in Silicon Valley and the startup ecosystem in general that failure is a good thing because you learn from it.

“And indeed, the secret of Silicon Valley over the last few decades has been that you can fail and then people will give you a second chance. We've seen repeat entrepreneurs who failed a couple of times but then eventually succeeded. 

“Failure is certainly something you can learn from. But the whole culture around failing being a good thing, I don't agree with. 

“This is a different answer from what you’re supposed to say as a VC. But failure is not good. It is incredibly painful. And I've seen a lot of people that never recovered from it.”

While failure may offer valuable lessons, Turk's perspective sheds light on its harsh realities. As startups navigate the bumpy landscape of entrepreneurship, understanding the gravity of failure can be pivotal in their journey toward sustainable success.

We interviewed three agtech companies at the Paris International Agricultural Show to see how startups can contribute to feeding future generations sustainably.

## Stress-free Plants
Clément Soulier, Deputy Chief Executive of [Axioma](https://www.axioma-biologicals.com/) told us how the startup is helping crops better adapt to climate pressures. 

“With Axioma, we're trying to offer farmers new agricultural input solutions that will enable crops to combat and better withstand the stress caused by climate change, by providing biostimulants and biocontrol products that will complement the solutions that already exist on the market.”

The startup was created in 2012 by Anthony Bugat whose vision was to bring new solutions to agriculture in order to feed the population in a sustainable way. It was when he became a father that he felt the need to contribute to the evolution of agriculture towards more sustainable practices.

“Agriculture is the foundation of our food,” Soulier explained. “However it will have to integrate more and more solutions, such as biostimulants, but also artificial intelligence and precision farming, and it's a combination of all these solutions that will enable tomorrow's agriculture to continue to perform, to become even more efficient and more sustainable. That’s obviously a goal for our generation, but above all, for future generations.”

## Insights on Agricultural Production with Satellite Data 
How food gets from farms to our plates is a complicated process. Startup [Hyperplan](https://www.hyperplan.fr/) is using satellite data to help monitor crops and bring more visibility to the whole value chain. 

“When we first launched we heard that the actors along the value chain were lacking visibility on the production,” explained Thibault Miremont, Head of Customer Success at Hyperplan. “So we are trying to help commercial teams monitor their market potential in their territory and their market shares in order to know an easy way where to prospect first. We mainly help agricultural cooperatives that are buying crops from farmers and reselling the crops to other clients.”

The data they gather from satellites is processed through Hyperplan’s AI-powered software and offers a global view of production and real-time crop monitoring.

## Robot Farmers
A pioneer in agricultural robotics solutions, [Naïo Technologies](https://www.naio-technologies.com/en/home/) creates robots to help make farming easier. We spoke with a representative of Interfel, the inter-professional association for fresh fruit and vegetables that was presenting one of Naïo Technologies robots at the show. 

“We're presenting a robot that can be used by fruit and vegetable growers, and in particular this model can be used in greenhouses and passes between the rows of vegetables.”

The 100% electric lightweight robots are already able to weed, hoe, seed, and transport between different types of plants but will eventually be able to help farmers in different ways. 

“There are several issues for growers at the moment, including herbicide use. We're going to try more and more to reduce the use of herbicides, by mechanical work. And so, the use of robots is going to limit the amount of hard work, allowing growers to focus on more difficult tasks.”

## AgStacked - Tech for Food
Do you eat five fruits and vegetables a day? While that’s the recommended daily amount from the World Health Organization, food scarcity in many areas around the world limits people’s access to fresh produce and healthy food. 

Emily Harayda, along with co-founder Jonathan Mitnikz, are attacking the source of the problem – fresh produce supply chains. Together they brought to life [AgStacked](https://www.agstacked.com/).

Founded in 2022, the Amsterdam-based startup’s platform is designed to provide quality transparency and reduce food waste via insights into the supply chain. This helps get food from farm to table faster, an important aspect when produce has such a short shelf life. 

In July 2023, the startup raised funds in a deal headed by APX Axel Springer Porsche which will be used to expand AgStack’s business to the Dutch and German markets. 

We’ll be keeping an eye on this Dutch startup as AgStacked continues fighting food scarcity in 2024.

## Heart Aerospace - Revolutionizing Aviation
If you’ve ever felt “flygskam”, Swedish for feeling ashamed of flying because of its environmental impacts, you’ll be glad to learn about a Swedish startup set to transform aviation. 

[Heart Aerospace](https://heartaerospace.com/), co-founded by the visionary team of Klara Forslund and Anders Forslund, is developing electric regional aircraft, promising a cleaner and more sustainable future for air travel. The company's aircraft has zero operational emissions and a low infrastructure footprint of all types of regional transport, connecting the large network of small airports adjacent to city centers.

## Carbon Equity - Leading the Charge for Sustainable Investments
When it comes to investing in climate change solutions, it’s hard to know where to begin. [Carbon Equity](https://www.carbonequity.com/) aims to change this.  

Jacqueline van den Ende, Lara Koole, Jeff Gomez, and Liza Rubinstein, the founders of Carbon Equity, are helping make investors’ money matter more while fueling the climate transition. 

Through diversified portfolios of climate impact companies selected by Carbon Equity’s experts, investors can invest with a minimum of as low as €100,000. These investments then help grow important solutions for the climate transition. 

In October 2023, the team raised a Series A bringing their total funding up to €9 million. The capital will be used to scale up international expansion, grow distribution through neo-banks and wealth management platforms, and lower investment minimums to €25,000, making climate investing more accessible to a larger public.

## Ecoroots - Mushroom Packaging Solutions
The world has a plastic problem. Mushrooms could be the solution. 

With a background in food science and chemistry and a commitment to creating a better future for our planet, Lavanya Bhandari created [Ecoroots](https://www.ecoroot.co/), a startup that uses mycelium from mushrooms to create packaging materials.

The solution consists of biodegradable and compostable materials, which can be safely disposed of at the end of their life cycle. This offers a better alternative to traditional packaging materials like plastic or polystyrene.

The Ireland-based startup was valued at €1.73 million after its first fundraising round last June – an enormous estimation given the startup was just barely a year old. With an impressive valuation following its initial fundraising round, Ecoroot's story signifies a promising shift towards sustainable packaging.

In many areas of Senegal, water is sparse. Yet farmers don’t necessarily know how much to water their crops, when to fertilize, or what the weather conditions are for the day or week.Tolbi uses satellite images and AI in order to help farmers make decisions about their crops. With slim access to smartphones or the internet in Senegal, the startup created a call line in farmers’ local language where they can access this information and know just how much to water or fertilize.With 75% of agricultural land in the world being farmed by individual families, it’s important that they have the right tools to be able to produce the most amount of food possible. These polluted soils significantly slow the growth of plants, making them more vulnerable to bugs or disease and reducing the quality of production.&nbsp;<a href="http://www.biomede.fr">Biomede</a>, a startup based in Ecully, France, researched a process called phytoremediation which regenerates soils and extracts unwanted pollutants from plants. They have adapted the process to help farmers get more out of their land. Biomede’s technology diagnoses the pollution levels in a plot of land, creates a seed mixture based on the findings, and when it’s time to harvest, retests the amounts of metals taken out of the soil. With 97% of batteries ending up in landfills or being incinerated, the need for a better system is growing. A French startup has created a metal and plastic free, sustainable energy solution using just&nbsp;papers and enzymes.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.befc.global/">BeFC</a> biofuel cells are a biodegradable energy source that helps to protect the environment.&nbsp;“We create electricity by using glucose and oxygen, which are two materials that can be found abundantly on the planet earth,” explained Dr. Bilal Demir, a chemical and polymer engineer at BeFC. “And we focus on more low power electronics for applications, such as in healthcare, medical, IoT, and logistics.”BeFC raised 6 million euros in their seed round in 2021 and are now heading into a series A round. UK startup,&nbsp;<a href="https://c-e-int.com/">Connected Energy</a> has developed a way to not only store energy for consumers and power systems, but also to participate in a circular economy by using second-life EV batteries for their storage systems.After around 10 years of use, EV batteries have typically lost a large amount of capacity and this impacts vehicle range. At this point, batteries are often changed so that vehicles can stay on the road longer. But these batteries still have 40% of life left in them. Connected Energy takes these batteries and recycles them to use the remaining capacity in stationary second life applications.With the current rise of EVs, the need to recycle their batteries will increase immensely a decade from now. The UK startup positions themselves at the intersection of this energy trilemma, the electrification of transport and the circular economy. Their storage solutions can help consumers decrease their electricity bill and generate additional revenue through demand-side management and flexibility services.
