57% of people say they use AI technology daily. But how is it impacting our world? We dive into the full report from Roland Berger.

Artificial intelligence has become inescapable in both our private and public lives. It raises fears, sparks hope, and ignites polarizing debates. But even with all the risks it carries, AI stands as a powerful catalyst for transformation.

Given this context, Roland Berger and Viva Technology sought to answer the question: How deeply will AI transform our daily lives?

This new study is fueled by insights from the community brainstorming event, The Good Hack, which took place at VivaTech in May 2024. The theme: “Navigating AI for a Better Future." 

Roland Berger surveyed more than 14,000 VivaTech participants about their opinions on AI, the major challenges ahead, and how AI can be used to solve societal and environmental problems.

Here are five valuable takeaways from the report:

## 1. High levels of optimism for AI’s potential in health, employment, and the environment, but deep divisions over its influence on democracy.

Roland Berger’s analysis found that AI is already massively used in French society, and the vast majority of people recognize AI's potential to positively impact our world. But few respondents at VivaTech had more than a surface-level understanding of how AI works and the underlying technology that powers it. Still, they were excited about how AI could improve their lives.	
- 57% say they use AI technology daily. Only 5% report never using it.
- 92% anticipate positive effects on Health and Wellbeing, 81% on Employment and Inclusion, and 80% on the Environment.
- Perception of AI's influence on citizen trust and democracy is deeply divided: 48% anticipate a “negative” or “very negative” impact, while 50% foresee a “positive” or “very positive” outcome.

## 2. AI will improve trust in technology, make education more accessible, and increase fairness.

AI is opening the door to a more connected and fairer future by reshaping how we engage with technology and institutions. Here are three of the many ways outlined in the report:

1. AI tools can help governments create more inclusive and effective policies, thereby strengthening public trust.

2. AI is making education more accessible by helping students and educators easily access and organize information.

3. AI reduces biases in hiring by focusing on skills rather than demographic factors.

## 3. AI will drive better quality of life

AI is revolutionizing the healthcare sector. Advancements include analyzing DNA for disease diagnosis and making it easier to develop treatments for rare diseases. In fact, “disease detection and diagnosis support” was the #1 response from The Good Hack participants when asked about the positive effects of AI on health and wellbeing (13%).

The report shares many more ways AI is transforming healthcare including powering [wearable devices](https://www.vivatechnology.com/news/wearables-the-future-of-health-and-wellness) to enable remote patient monitoring and enhancing hospital efficiency.

AI can also improve overall quality of life by playing a key role in climate change solutions, particularly the advancement of decarbonization and accelerating R&D in green technologies.

## 4. AI also poses risks to humans.

While AI holds the potential for many positive breakthroughs, it also carries considerable risks. We are already seeing the negative effects of AI’s influence in these spheres:

- **Misinformation and Manipulation**: AI increases the spread of misinformation, can generate factually incorrect or fabricated information, and can be manipulated to produce harmful or offensive content. 

- **Environmental Impact**: AI models require substantial computing power, leading to increased greenhouse gas emissions. Data centers that support AI computations, also contribute significantly to global electricity demand and carbon emissions. This impact is expected to grow.

- **Job Automation and Inequality**: AI-powered automation poses a risk to many jobs, particularly ones involving repetitive tasks. Women are at a higher risk of job displacement because they work more often in administrative roles. In France alone, 1.4 million jobs could be augmented by AI.

## 5. More regulations are needed to encourage ethical AI development and protect people.

AI technologies carry significant ethical and privacy challenges, and there is an urgent need for regulations. AI's ability to analyze and cross-reference vast amounts of personal data is already leading to privacy violations, such as TikTok's €76 million settlement over unauthorized AI-driven data collection. 

Generative AI has also upended Intellectual Property structures, and the dispute over using copyrighted content to train AI models remains unresolved. Roland Berger’s survey found that “intellectual property” was the #2 response when VivaTech participants were asked about concerns over “AI and Trust.”

The time has come to harness technology to fight global warming, as illustrated by the 2024 edition of VivaTech. The mobilization of AI resources could prove decisive in the process of complying with the new CSRD directive.

Of all the services that AI can provide in the fight against global warming and decarbonization, a concrete and operational use case for businesses stands out: AI can make it easier for businesses to comply with the CSRD directive. As we know, the European Commission’s aim with this set of rules is to harmonize companies’ sustainability reporting and improve the comparability and quality of published ESG data. This is a very positive step in principle, but it could prove to be a headache for companies. Compared with the previous directive of 2014 (Non-Financial Reporting Directive - NFRD), the CSRD will gradually apply between 2024 and 2028 to a much larger number of companies (including all companies listed on European regulated markets). It imposes standardization for reporting obligations, the publication of a sustainable development report in a compulsory digital format as part of the management report, and the compulsory verification of information by a statutory auditor or an independent third-party body. 

As a result, many French companies are now required to publish detailed information on their environmental, social, and governance risks, opportunities, and impacts. The cornerstone of the CSRD is ‘double materiality’, in other words, the obligation for companies to publish information on the impact of sustainability issues on their financial performance, but also on their own impact on the environment and society. In total, almost 1,200 indicators must be provided, in the form of figures or written content, on a wide range of subjects such as the level and scale of its greenhouse gas emissions and the efforts made to reduce them, as well as working conditions, diversity, inclusion and the role and operation of its governance bodies.

AI and generative AI tools will therefore be essential throughout the process of gathering, analyzing, and formatting information. An AI tool can, for example, download a huge amount of a sector’s extra-financial reports to help identify benchmarks and key issues, without the need for exhausting and time-consuming research. Generative AI can also pre-write the content, since some CSRD indicators are to be written, and generate the first versions of the sustainability report based on the corpus of data from ‘healthy’ companies on which it has been trained.

Thanks to ‘fuzzy matching’, an algorithmic process based on the approximate correspondence of data, it will be possible to process the company’s huge amount of data and ‘pre-wire’ it to the 1,200 indicators of the CSRD. However, this implies putting in place tools to identify reliable, precise, and accurate data, because, as we have clearly understood, the exercise does not simply consist of publishing raw data, but verifiable data. In other words, this means adopting a responsible approach to AI in terms of controlling sources (indicating pdf sources or use cases used, etc.) and making quantified indicators or content explicit, particularly in terms of the company’s preparedness and adaptation to climate change.

CSRD therefore requires a global process for putting the company’s sustainability data
and scenarios in order, which only ‘scaled’ and responsible AI can make more reliable,
faster and more operational.

At VivaTech, we’ve been on a [mission](https://www.vivatechnology.com/our-commitments) to get certified for ISO 20121 certification for over two years. It’s been quite the journey, but just after the 2024 edition of VivaTech this May, we proudly announced that we’ve achieved the certification!

So what does this mean for VivaTech as a company? And why does it matter? 

## Starting the Process
The road to achieving ISO 20121 certification began in the fall of 2022, following initial reflections in the spring to identify the most suitable certification for us. We embarked on a two-year process, using the certification as a tool to structure our company, formalize our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy, and engage our VivaTech team members in the process.

With the guidance of the IPAMA consulting firm, the certification was carried out in three stages: a compilation of structuring documents, interviews with employees to see if these policies were implemented throughout the company, and ended with a thorough audit of the 2024 VivaTech event. 

This comprehensive approach helped us define a clear roadmap based on four key commitments and set long-term goals for sustainable growth.

## Working to Reduce Our Environmental Footprint
We understand that a sustainable future requires us to prioritize both people and the planet, which is why reducing our environmental footprint is a critical pillar of our CSR strategy. To achieve this, we have adopted a circular model for our production processes, focusing on eco-design and resource efficiency. 

For instance, our “VivaLand” scenography incorporates reusable stages and the startup corners have been in use since 2019, alongside rented materials and the elimination of carpeting to minimize waste. Additionally, we promote soft mobility by creating a Bike Park, encouraging attendees to opt for cleaner transportation options.

## Working for a More Inclusive & Diverse Tech Sector
Promoting a more inclusive and diverse tech sector is essential for fostering innovation and creativity, as the best ideas emerge from teams with diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and experiences. We are committed to this pillar by actively monitoring gender parity on our conference stages, achieving a 41% representation this year across all stages. 

We also champion women in tech through initiatives like the Female Founder Challenge and the 100+100 mentoring session, which connected women and girls in unique mentorship opportunities. Additionally, we opened our event to students and educational institutions, leveraging VivaTech as a powerful educational tool.

## Engaging, Educating, & Acting as a Tool for Change
We strive to build a sustainable future and a more inclusive society, which starts with being the change we want to see. We highlight committed and innovative solutions through initiatives like the Tech for Change label, which recognized 30% of startup innovations dedicated to positive impact, and the Impact Bridge, featuring over 50 startups focused on sustainability initiatives. 

Through The Good Hack, we engaged with VivaTech attendees to explore AI's role in addressing societal challenges, garnering 14,000 contributions. We also onboard our partners via the Viva+ club, bringing together large actors to work together towards common impact goals. Additionally, our Saturday program introduces the tech ecosystem to a wider audience through mentoring, coding classes, and this year’s EthicAll Game Jam.

The new legislation, Markets in Crypto Assets Regulation (MiCA), mandates anyone seeking to issue crypto to produce a “crypto-asset white paper”, a description of their initiative with the project, as well as supporting reserves equal to the value of their tokens in an amount equivalent to the number of tokens issued.The text will now be sent to the European Parliament and is subject to their approval before becoming published for the European Union. If all goes well, MiCA will start to be enforced in the beginning of 2024. After this monumental regulation, the EU wants to share its insights with the rest of the crypto-using world. The first order of 100 vehicles, made by the giant&nbsp;Pepsico, was placed back in 2017 when&nbsp;Tesla first announced the idea.&nbsp;Musk promised that the trucks can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 20 seconds, even with a full load, and their battery range of 300 or 500 can be charged to 70% capacity in just 30 minutes.
