Artificial intelligence has become inescapable in both our private and public lives. It raises fears, sparks hope, and ignites polarizing debates. But even with all the risks it carries, AI stands as a powerful catalyst for transformation.

Given this context, Roland Berger and Viva Technology sought to answer the question: How deeply will AI transform our daily lives?

This new study is fueled by insights from the community brainstorming event, The Good Hack, which took place at VivaTech in May 2024. The theme: “Navigating AI for a Better Future." 

Roland Berger surveyed more than 14,000 VivaTech participants about their opinions on AI, the major challenges ahead, and how AI can be used to solve societal and environmental problems.

Here are five valuable takeaways from the report:

## 1. High levels of optimism for AI’s potential in health, employment, and the environment, but deep divisions over its influence on democracy.

Roland Berger’s analysis found that AI is already massively used in French society, and the vast majority of people recognize AI's potential to positively impact our world. But few respondents at VivaTech had more than a surface-level understanding of how AI works and the underlying technology that powers it. Still, they were excited about how AI could improve their lives.	
- 57% say they use AI technology daily. Only 5% report never using it.
- 92% anticipate positive effects on Health and Wellbeing, 81% on Employment and Inclusion, and 80% on the Environment.
- Perception of AI's influence on citizen trust and democracy is deeply divided: 48% anticipate a “negative” or “very negative” impact, while 50% foresee a “positive” or “very positive” outcome.

## 2. AI will improve trust in technology, make education more accessible, and increase fairness.

AI is opening the door to a more connected and fairer future by reshaping how we engage with technology and institutions. Here are three of the many ways outlined in the report:

1. AI tools can help governments create more inclusive and effective policies, thereby strengthening public trust.

2. AI is making education more accessible by helping students and educators easily access and organize information.

3. AI reduces biases in hiring by focusing on skills rather than demographic factors.

## 3. AI will drive better quality of life

AI is revolutionizing the healthcare sector. Advancements include analyzing DNA for disease diagnosis and making it easier to develop treatments for rare diseases. In fact, “disease detection and diagnosis support” was the #1 response from The Good Hack participants when asked about the positive effects of AI on health and wellbeing (13%).

The report shares many more ways AI is transforming healthcare including powering [wearable devices](https://www.vivatechnology.com/news/wearables-the-future-of-health-and-wellness) to enable remote patient monitoring and enhancing hospital efficiency.

AI can also improve overall quality of life by playing a key role in climate change solutions, particularly the advancement of decarbonization and accelerating R&D in green technologies.

## 4. AI also poses risks to humans.

While AI holds the potential for many positive breakthroughs, it also carries considerable risks. We are already seeing the negative effects of AI’s influence in these spheres:

- **Misinformation and Manipulation**: AI increases the spread of misinformation, can generate factually incorrect or fabricated information, and can be manipulated to produce harmful or offensive content. 

- **Environmental Impact**: AI models require substantial computing power, leading to increased greenhouse gas emissions. Data centers that support AI computations, also contribute significantly to global electricity demand and carbon emissions. This impact is expected to grow.

- **Job Automation and Inequality**: AI-powered automation poses a risk to many jobs, particularly ones involving repetitive tasks. Women are at a higher risk of job displacement because they work more often in administrative roles. In France alone, 1.4 million jobs could be augmented by AI.

## 5. More regulations are needed to encourage ethical AI development and protect people.

AI technologies carry significant ethical and privacy challenges, and there is an urgent need for regulations. AI's ability to analyze and cross-reference vast amounts of personal data is already leading to privacy violations, such as TikTok's €76 million settlement over unauthorized AI-driven data collection. 

Generative AI has also upended Intellectual Property structures, and the dispute over using copyrighted content to train AI models remains unresolved. Roland Berger’s survey found that “intellectual property” was the #2 response when VivaTech participants were asked about concerns over “AI and Trust.”

By analyzing factors such as decreased engagement, negative feedback, or frequent service complaints, predictive models can score each customer based on their churn risk. 

**Company Use Case**: Netflix uses predictive analytics to identify subscribers who are at risk of canceling their service. A user’s viewing habits, engagement levels, and account activity are analyzed and if someone is flagged as a churn risk, Netflix can proactively offer personalized recommendations or promotions to try to retain these customers. 

### 2. Product Demand Planning 

Predictive analytics can estimate how much traffic an e-retailer or brick and mortar store is likely to receive on any date, based on customer traffic patterns. Companies can then plan their staffing and inventory levels to optimize customer experience, avoid missed sales and reduce costs from overstocking. Product demand planning is especially useful during holiday shopping seasons. 

**Company Use Case**: Walmart uses predictive analytics to forecast product demand and ensure optimal inventory levels across its stores. This helps maximize sales by reducing costs from excess stock or missed sales due to shortages. It also improves the shopping experience for customers by ensuring popular items are well-stocked.

**Company Use Case**: H&M uses predictive analytics to track social media conversations around emerging fashion trends and customer preferences. The company uses this data to stay ahead of the curve and apply the findings to its product development and marketing strategies. 

## Great Examples of Predictive Analytics Improving Personalization 

### 1. Personalized Product Recommendations 

Micro-targeting and personalized sales are extremely valuable to retailers because attention to detail keeps consumers coming back. E-commerce and retail companies use predictive analytics to analyze browsing behavior, purchase history, and demographic data to make product recommendations. Algorithms suggest products that customers are likely to be interested in, which can then be offered to them through marketing campaigns. 

**Company Use Case**: Amazon uses predictive analytics to analyze past purchase behavior and browsing history. This helps the company personalize email recommendations, online ads and promotions, driving higher engagement and conversion rates. Amazon’s personalized recommendations drive engagement, increase sales, and improve the shopping experience by aligning it with each customer's unique preferences.  

### 2. Enhancing Customer Loyalty Programs 

Loyalty programs have a significant impact on customer retention and happiness. By predicting what types of rewards are most appealing to individual customers, predictive analytics helps maximize loyalty program effectiveness. If a customer is especially upset, this information can help agents tailor the level of empathy in their responses or escalate issues to higher-level support.  

Empathy detection is one of the most innovative use cases for predictive analytics in customer service because it can gauge the emotional needs of customers in real-time. Sentiment analysis models can suggest the agent use calming language, avoid overly technical explanations, or offer an apology early in the interaction. Empathy detection helps humanize customer service interactions, making customers feel understood and valued. This can reduce customer churn, increase loyalty, and improve their feelings toward a brand. 

Technology is sometimes criticized for taking humanity out of customer service. One of the most effective ways to protect against cyber threats is through Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). This multi-step login process creates an extra layer of defense, making it much harder for cyber attackers to gain access to your accounts and systems.  

This guide explores how Multi-Factor Authentication works, its benefits, and when it should be used. 

## What is Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) 

Multi-Factor Authentication is a security method that requires users to confirm their identity using multiple ways or “factors” before gaining access to an account, application, or system. Single-factor authentication only requires a password to sign in, while MFA adds another level of security to reduce the chance of unauthorized access. 

MFA makes it significantly harder for cyberattackers to access your information. That’s because even if they have your password, MFA asks for a second (and sometimes third) piece of evidence to log in, and blocks access without it. 

When it comes to modern cybersecurity, passwords alone are often not enough to safeguard sensitive data. MFA is now considered a standard security measure for many online platforms such as email providers, banking services, and social media sites. 

### What are the Three Factors in MFA 

Multi-Factor Authentication relies on at least two of the following factor types to verify user identity: 

1. **Something You Know**: This factor includes information only the user should have knowledge of, like a password or PIN. It’s the most common form of authentication but also the easiest one to compromise. 

2. **Something You Have**: This factor involves a physical object or device in the user’s possession, such as a smartphone, badge, or security key. The best known examples of this factor are a one-time code delivered via text message, or a code generated by an authenticator app on your phone. 

3. **Something You Are**: This factor is based on a user’s unique physical identifier, such as a fingerprint, facial recognition, or voice recognition. For example, face recognition and fingerprint scan factors are commonly used to unlock smartphones. Biometric verification is considered highly secure because it’s difficult to replicate or steal. 

Each additional factor creates another tier of security and further decreases the chance of breaches. Systems involving highly-sensitive information may require all three factors for authentication. 

### An Example of MFA 

A common interaction with Multi-Factor Authentication happens when people log into a financial account online. Let’s say you want to log into your bank account: 

#### Step 1: Enter Username and Password 
Your online banking platform asks you to fill in your personal username and password. This is the first factor, aka “something you know.” 
 
#### Step 2: Enter a One-Time Passcode 
After submitting your password, the system asks you for a second factor. The bank sends a one-time passcode (OTP) to your phone via text message, email, or an authentication app like Google Authenticator. Retrieve the code and enter it into the banking portal. Your phone is the “something you have” factor in this case. 

#### Step 3: You’re Verified! 
If both factors are correct, authentication is successful and the system gives you access to your account. If either the password or the one-time passcode is incorrect, access is denied. 

In some highly secure banking systems, the user may also be required to verify their identity through a “something you are” factor such as a fingerprint scan or facial recognition. 

## What Are the Benefits of Multi-Factor Authentication 

Multi-Factor Authentication has many important benefits for companies and individuals: 

1. **Enhanced Security**: MFA significantly reduces the risk of stolen data and identity theft by making it much harder for accounts and systems to be compromised. 

2. **Protection Against Cyberattacks**: In cases of phishing or other cyberattacks where passwords are compromised, MFA makes it much harder for attackers to succeed. 

3. **Safe Remote Work Access**: With the rise of remote and hybrid work, MFA helps secure remote access to company systems and data. MFA reduces the risk of breaches caused by employees logging in from unsecured home networks, public Wi-Fi or personal devices. 

4. **Increased User Confidence**: MFA demonstrates to users that a company is committed to safeguarding their personal information. Users are more likely to feel secure knowing that their accounts are protected by advanced security measures. 

5. **Compliance with Security Regulations**: Many industries require MFA to comply with regulations including in financial services, healthcare and government. Implementing MFA reduces the risk of penalties and can help organizations pass security compliance checks. 

6. **Lower Security Costs**: Putting MFA in place is often more cost-effective than dealing with the consequences of a security breach. Fewer compromised accounts also means fewer customer support calls related to security issues, which can reduce IT help desk costs.

Predictive analytics uses historical data to forecast future outcomes. ### 3 Quick Examples of Predictive Models

To better understand how predictive analytics works, let’s look at a few common types of predictive models used to assess data:

1. **Classification Models**: These models sort data into categories based on certain characteristics. Classification models use past examples or behavior to decide which classification a new piece of data falls into. 
A simple classification model example is an email spam filter – it looks at past emails marked as spam and learns to identify new emails that belong in the spam category. Common business uses of classification models include predicting if a customer will buy a product or churn, predicting if a loan applicant will repay, and sorting medical scans into "disease" or "no disease” categories.
2. **Regression Models**: These models predict a numerical outcome. Regression models determine the relationship between different variables to predict outcomes using a mathematical equation. 
For example, a real estate regression model could predict how much a house is likely to sell for by examining past sales data such as the size, location, and condition of homes previously sold. Other common regression model uses include forecasting weather temperatures, predicting future company revenue numbers, and determining future demand for products to optimize inventory levels.
3. **Time Series Models**: These models make predictions based on time-related data patterns. Time series models analyze data collected at regular intervals (daily, monthly, yearly, etc.) to understand trends, seasonal patterns, and cycles.
Stock price forecasts are made using time series models that examine past values to predict future prices based on recurring patterns. Other common uses include forecasting sales during holiday periods, predicting seasonal tourism demand, or projecting energy consumption.

### What is Predictive AI?

By analyzing applicant data such as education, work experience, and skills it can predict the likelihood of a candidate succeeding in a role. Prioritizing candidates more likely to be a good fit streamlines the hiring process. 

2. **Employee Performance and Engagement**: Predictive models can analyze performance metrics and engagement data to help managers identify high-potential employees, and support others who may be struggling. This allows companies to better allocate resources and improve employee engagement resources.

3. **Turnover Prediction**: By analyzing data on job satisfaction, employee engagement, and performance metrics, an HR department can identify employees at risk of leaving the company. HR can then take proactive steps to improve retention and reduce costs.

Data has allowed Moët Hennessy to better analyze important parameters and guarantee the best quality fermentations, as well as evaluate the quality potential of each grape juice before fermentation. “Ten years ago data allowed us a breakthrough innovation with the development of a real-time fermentation monitoring system now implemented in all the Moët & Chandon wineries.”

“In terms of viticulture, data has been key to optimizing the harvest date by better understanding the grapes maturation process of a given year, it is involved in optimizing all the harvest complex logistics, it brings more precision in pressing management and most recently it has been useful to determine grape quality in the pressing centers.”

## AI in Winemaking
For Brévot, the evolution of AI has opened a new era in data. At Moët Hennessy, AI is now applied at various stages of the winemaking process. 

“We use AI for the optical sorting of grapes. The first application was to learn from pictures of the black skin grapes delivered in the pressing centers.” The AI determines the potential color of the grapes and selects the best ones for red winemaking. 

“A more recent usage is, again to learn from pictures of grapes, but this time to evaluate the eventual presence of rot, a prevalent problem for white winemaking,” he added.

“Currently, we are trying to apply AI to fermentations. Thanks to our in-house real-time fermentation monitoring system, we have accumulated a huge library of fermentation kinetics over the different vintages.” They would like to train AI to use this library to predict once the fermentation has started, and how it might continue. “We would be able to better anticipate the potential deviations and act preventively,” Brévot observed. 

## Sustainable Agriculture with AI 
Artificial intelligence has proved helpful in more than one use case, especially when it comes to innovating for the planet. Brévot explains, “The wine and spirits industry is facing huge challenges related to climate change. For centuries, the driver for progress was product quality and over time our industry has developed by continuously improving an extremely successful production model. But climate change and environmental issues are challenging this model, requiring breakthrough innovations to reinvent ourselves sustainably.

In agriculture, the challenge lies in shifting to regenerative practices that harness ecological services, demanding a deep understanding of complex ecosystem dynamics achievable through AI-driven data analysis.

“Moët Hennessy strongly contributes to this challenge by increasing its research investments,” Brévot expressed. “Our new research center is an illustration of this involvement. So is the World Living Soils Forum created in 2022 by Moët Hennessy to address all these challenges to preserve and regenerate soils

## The Human Touch
Addressing climate change and reducing environmental impact require two key actions: finding sustainable biobased solutions and implementing precise, low-impact processes. 

“In both cases, it means developing our ability to deal with extreme complexity, a complexity that goes far beyond what humans can actually deal with. Data and AI will give us the capacity to embrace the complexity and make the best decisions. These new technologies are not going to replace the human-added value, especially in our business where product elaboration is not just a matter of technics, it is also a matter of know-how, creativity, and intuition.”

“They will create a deeper and wider appreciation of the situation, an augmented decision capacity enabling the actors to be even more connected to nature in the future than they are now.”

## The Future of AI Agriculture
This is just the beginning of the AI revolution, but Brévot expressed his belief that AI can be an opportunity to scale up, accelerate, and find innovative solutions. 

“Regarding viticulture in the future, AI will be an important tool to understand not only how a vine is growing but also the behavior of the entire vineyard ecosystem. If we can manage to have this level of understanding, we will be able to act on the field smartly by leveraging ecological services rather than using external inputs.”

“In terms of winemaking, we foresee a huge impact of AI on lowering energy consumption and on fine-tuning fermentations and product aging,” he added.

## How urban farming can help address climate change
"Urban agriculture historically has proven over and over again to be a meaningful part of a resilient food system. We have to look to the past to think about how urban agriculture will be applied in the future.” For Henry, growing food in smaller urban spaces in the past was about resilience. “It was about having something else you can trade with your neighbors.”

Citing examples like victory gardens from World War I and II, and vegetable gardening during Covid, Henry believes that urban farming is a way to prevent shocks in supply chains. 

But it’s not just political or economic conflicts that can induce shortages in the system, but now with climate change, it’s about environmental shocks.

“In order to prepare for changing weather patterns, habitat patterns, more storms, etc., indoor greenhouses or vertical farms can make the future more resilient. It's solutions like low-tech versions of protected agriculture, all the way up to high-tech versions of vertical farming. Even if we're just thinking about irrigation strategies or shading strategies, agriculture will need to grow up to face climate change, and controlled environment agriculture is one representation of that transition.”

## Agritecture Success Stories
The Agritecture team works on a variety of projects, from individual farms to master planning of communities and cities, all the way to corporate advising.

“One of the projects we're proud of is the city of [Dallas](https://www.agritecture.com/blog/2023/3/8/city-of-dallas-approves-comprehensive-urban-agriculture-plan). We just did the comprehensive urban agriculture plan for the city.

“We’ve worked with them for three years to try and balance technology and equity related to their move to have more urban agriculture. I'm really proud of what we did there because we created a galvanizing community and now there's a program that gives access of vacant lots to community members.

“[Farm.One](https://farm.one/) here in Brooklyn is another one we’re proud of. It’s a sort of farm for chefs, where they've got such a diverse set of crops that are typically imported from all kinds of places. And they grow them instead here and residents get them as well as chefs. It's a very premium experience of a farm.

“In 2022, we worked on the [For Hops](https://farm.one/) project, which was more of a precision agriculture project, looking at hops in the Czech Republic. The hops are threatened by climate change and drought conditions are creating a lot of effects on the quality of the acidity of the plants as well as the yields. So we implemented six pilot IOT farm installations and helped develop the foundations for an AI-driven app.”

## Misconceptions About Urban Farming
From not being profitable or scalable to not believing it will make an impact, Henry highlighted a lot of misguided thoughts on urban agriculture.

“Most people don't see the potential beyond niche. And they're not totally wrong. It's really about practicing design thinking. There are a lot of options for a vacant space, whatever the size and whatever the climate is, you just need to go through a process to consider your options. There's not one way to do this.”

“On one side people believe that vertical farming is about creating a utopia. And the other side, people say it’s not meaningful and will never work. But data suggests that it’s somewhere in the middle.

“We know that with technology, we can grow more in less space. And there are certain places where that can be profitable, depending on the labor, water, and energy costs.

“There are spaces, especially near cities that are not necessarily considered for agriculture that could be considered for agriculture. Peri-urban agriculture has enormous potential because it’s the future area where the cities will develop. There's just more space available.

“One study suggests that we could provide 50 to 70 percent of the fruits and vegetables for cities just on the edges of them. Greenhouses are extremely productive.”

## Advice on how to get into urban farming
For someone who didn’t grow up in the agricultural industry, Henry observed that hands-on experience was the only way for him to learn. 

“I didn't grow up with a green thumb. I've had to really observe and research and study how agriculture works. Getting hands-on experience is very important. It's hard to be taken seriously in the sector if you've never been on a farm or understand farmers. 

“I asked the questions I had. And that allowed me to build my network and relationships that have lasted a long time. That's very beneficial in this sector, you need to have a network of people you can depend upon to validate and connect you to grow.

“Sustainability is not an A to Z journey. It's a cycle of continual improvement and observation. So I think some of those same principles of learning something, sharing it, and then going back and assessing is beneficial.”

The pursuit of the next big breakthrough remains a constant in tech. Isabelle Ryl, Director of the Paris AI Research Institute, sheds light on the intricate role of research in unveiling the unforeseeable in tech innovation.

“[Prairie](https://prairie-institute.fr/), the Paris Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, specializes in AI but covers a lot of fields from applied mathematics to computer science with applications in all sciences, especially health,” Ryl explained. 

The institute’s mission is to become a global leader in AI research and higher education, making a significant contribution to the French, European, and global economies and technologies. 

## AI Collaborations
Based out of the [Parisanté](https://parisantecampus.fr/) campus in the south of Paris, Prairie boasts members from the academic community of researchers and teachers in AI, industrial members who are major actors in AI at the global level, and a group of international partners. 

“Not only is the mission of Prairie to do excellent research but also to contribute to the spread of
AI in society. To start this, we have to educate people in AI. 

“AI is something that will be used in every field. That’s why we’re working hard at the Institute to bring AI education to all students, whether they’re studying economics, physics, or sociology. We also have to transfer this innovation into real-world practices, either by working with big companies or creating startups.”

“Collaboration with companies is very important,” Ryl emphasized. “Researchers need to know the real problems that the industry is facing each day. So collaboration is really a way to create cross-fertilization between the two worlds.”

## The Future of Healthcare is Already Here
As we heard from AI and medical researcher Stéphanie Allassonière in [this article](https://www.vivatechnology.com/news/twinning-health-ai-s-path-to-personalized-healthcare) about digital twins, AI has accelerated many processes for researchers. From idea, to proof of concept, to functioning startup, a researcher can easily speed up the stages in between with the help of AI. 

“I'm really convinced that we have never seen such an acceleration of research than in the last few years,” Ryl told us. “And in every field. For example, there is a startup that is helping surgeons prepare for surgeries with a 3D view thanks to AI. They can go inside the bodies of people to plan how they will repair things.

“You have also people creating new molecules, new drugs using AI. That is to say, computers are proposing a few panels of possible molecules and researchers can test them. This limits the amount they have to test, perhaps to a few dozen instead of a few hundred possibilities. So this pre-selection by AI can help researchers go very fast.”

For Ryl, the next big tech innovation is already under development. “Research is all about continuous progress, but at some point, you have a breakthrough. No one can predict the next great technological breakthrough, but we can predict that it will come from research!.”

“There are 360 million streetlights in the world, a billion utility poles, and 500 million transformers. The question is: Can you make it more? And our feeling is that you can,” said Heather Ritchie, Chief Marketing Officer at Ubicquia.

[Ubicquia](https://www.ubicquia.com/) is making city infrastructure intelligent. From integrating 5G deployment to helping local police departments solve crimes with integrated cameras, the US-based company is transforming modern cities into smart cities. 

## A Bright Solution
How does a city know when a light goes out on an unbusy street? Where is the best place to put in a bike lane or change the speed limit to increase safety? 

“We've talked with mayors [who tell us] they pay every year for people to drive around in a truck looking for lighting outages,” Ritchie explained. “Imagine if you put a sensor on and before someone calls to complain or before you drive around in a truck to go find that, you know when lights go out and you use taxpayer dollars in the most efficient way to maintain your assets.”

Ubicquia’s solutions plug into streetlights, utility poles, and transformers to give cities data on important factors in their neighborhoods. 

“I compare it to a plug in your wall where you plug in your charger to charge your phone.
We've got the platforms that plug into that.”

One of their solutions creates an intelligent network of streetlights. “Cities can use those to dim and schedule lighting to reduce energy costs, CO2 emissions, and they can do it because some of them are managing hundreds of thousands of lights,” Ritchie told us.

## Fighting Crime
In addition to gathering data on lighting and traffic, Ubicquia’s streetlight solutions have solved actual murder investigations. 

“Governments, businesses, and police forces are looking for a way to deter and investigate crime. So, we've been selling an easy way to deploy license plate recognition and situational awareness cameras.

“We had a customer that contacted us yesterday, about the fact that it helped them solve two homicides in the last month,” Ritchie revealed.

## An Invisible Miracle
Almost [two-thirds](https://hbs.unctad.org/total-and-urban-population/) of the world’s population lives in urban areas. More people living closer together means more demand for connectivity. 

5G cell towers aren’t the prettiest structures, however. Ritchie explained that Ubicquia recently partnered with [Ericsson](https://www.ubicquia.com/products/ericsson-street-radio) to create a 5G small cell to integrate into streetlights and boost connectivity more discreetly. 

“This platform is nearly invisible from the street and that was the big thing that sold it to some neighborhoods that care about the aesthetics. It’s just a really elegant way to add network capacity in an unobtrusive way for the city,” she shared.

## Moving in the Right Direction
Optimizing traffic patterns and road safety in cities requires a large amount of data. Ubicquia also thought of how to gather it.

“The city owns the data [collected from Ubicquia cameras] and there are so many different data points on the various assets that they can use to make cities better,” said Ritchie.

“So it's things like tracking road usage, average speed, what type of vehicles are on it, cities are using that data to understand where they need to invest more. They can start using the data in different ways for more reliable service, better asset management, and public safety.”

## The Slow Road to Success
Ubicquia has helped cities save over $7.5 million in energy cost savings and over 31,000 tons of CO₂ to date. 

“The last two years we have been very busy announcing new products, evolving the street line platform. We won three of the five largest deals in the US last year we’re now in half of the top 30 cities in the US.”

“I think there was a realization for me coming in the door [as CMO two years ago,] that it takes time to set up a proper foundation. And we did that, and sometimes it meant we went a little bit slower at the beginning, so we can go faster now.”

“When you're just starting out, you know every single salesperson, you know every single deal. And I would say as a marketer, don't lose touch with that as you start to grow. 

“And also, make sure that you have the right team and you're hiring in the right order. It's really paid dividends.”

## An Accessible Smart City
While flying cars could be on the horizon for future smart cities, Ubicquia’s vision for the smart cities of today includes visible signs of progress and impact in cities.

“The Smart City could be anything,” Ritchie shared. “For us, what we want is the simplest path to a smart city. And we believe street lights are great entry points and incremental impact done in a really simple way is part of it.

“We're starting to do a lot more work with police departments. How do you make it easy to deter and investigate crime, particularly with policing shortages?

“It's so cities are more livable. And that they're using the intelligence and data within the city to deliver better services and better quality of life.

“It's just smarter, safer, more connected. That's what a smart city needs to be.”

Stephanie Allassonnière, an influential AI and medical researcher, has been immersed in the world of AI for over 15 years. Her career in mathematics and statistics has led to multiple roles in the research world. From co-founding a startup to leading classes as a professor, holding positions in the AI Institute in Paris, [PR[AI]RIE](https://prairie-institute.fr/), all the way to leading her current research in generative AI at [Parisanté](https://parisantecampus.fr/), a campus uniting actors in digital health research and innovation.

One of the facets of her current research is on digital twins in healthcare. A tool that could revolutionize prevention, personalized treatments, and overall optimization of the clinical pathway for patients and practitioners. 

## What’s a Digital Twin?
With many applications across sectors, from design and engineering to modeling products for e-commerce in 3D, digital twins have been growing legs in the tech world since [2017](https://www.challenge.org/insights/digital-twin-history/). But how can digital twins be used in healthcare?

**“The digital twin is, for me, the future of medicine,”** Allassonnière told us. “We are trying to create a digital twin of organs, and eventually a digital twin of the patient, with clinical imaging and genetic data. So this digital twin will help test different drugs, for example, and see which is the better one.”

Her research is part of a private and public consortium between several health institutions called [MediTwin](https://www.3ds.com/newsroom/press-releases/meditwin-launch). The project aims to create personalized virtual twins for better diagnosis and treatment. In particular, it will enable doctors to simulate future scenarios for a patient. 

“It's focused mostly on urgent neurodegenerative diseases and cancers,” Allassonnière added. “So, let’s say your parent has some memory defect. [With the digital twin], we’d have the patient fill out a questionnaire and we’d plug that data in and see in real time a prediction of the outcome of this evolution in 6 months time.” 

Dementia treatments are most [effective](https://alzheimer.ca/en/about-dementia/do-i-have-dementia/how-get-tested-dementia-tips-individuals-families-friends/10) when caught early on. Artificial intelligence in digital twins will be able to help patients act sooner and start personalized preventative treatments before having the first real symptoms. 

## The Evolution of AI in Medicine
Artificial Intelligence, and more specifically generative AI, has been in the spotlight since OpenAI released its AI tools over a year ago. But Allassonnière has been doing research in the field for over 15 years.

**“When I started in the field, it wasn’t actually called AI yet,”** she explained. “It was just called generative statistics. So, I did generative statistics in my Ph.D. and continued after working with standard classical statistical models at first and then going to include deep learning models.”

“Before, all the generative models that we were doing were very niche, they were only for medical doctors. And the AI boom came when you had to deal with many, many types of data and GPUs came into play. What changed was that **it started to be useful for everybody.”**

“What inspires me most about AI in medicine is the fact that we will be able to help people at any moment, from their non-disease stage up to the disease stage.”

## The Next Generation
As a woman in a male-dominant research field, Allassonnière wants to urge young women to not listen to the stereotypes around them. 

“I come from a discipline where women are very rare. I'm a mathematician,” she admitted. “So, I go to high schools and talk to students and teachers so that they stop [repeating the clichés] that I heard myself as a student.”

“I can only encourage women, and particularly young women, to **learn math, learn physics, and learn about computer science**, because we need a diversity of viewpoints. Do whatever you want, because all of our ideas together are really important to make things evolve.”

## A New Future for Medicine

The manufacturer did increase the recycled content from 2% to 3%. Although technically correct, the message gives the impression that the rug contains a large amount of recycled fiber.Are all “greentech’s” greenwashing? No. But are there words to be more precise on what the technology does? Yes. These technologies, such as AI, facial recognition, biofuels, or robotics, are game-changing and disrupt the way we use tools across industries.What categorizes a company as deep tech$1 We interviewed an expert on the subject,&nbsp;Xavier Lazarus, partner and co-founder of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.elaia.com/">Elaia</a>, a European digital deep tech VC, to understand more about the deep tech world and where these technologies might take us. &nbsp;<h2>How would you define deep tech$2</h2>“The term deep tech is used a lot nowadays, and isn’t well-defined,”&nbsp;said Xavier Lazarus.&nbsp;“At Elaia, we have an internal definition in order to qualify a company as deep tech. They must have one of three criteria. The company must be either a spin-off from academic research, be founded by someone who was a former researcher, or has come from the market, but has established a strategic partnership with academic research to build on their solution.”“If you have one of those criteria, we qualify the company as deep tech. And we can always intensify the R&amp;D of a company if it looks like they are working on a deep tech topic, but don’t have research in place.”&nbsp; &nbsp;<h2>Why does Elaia invest primarily in deep tech startups$3&nbsp;</h2>“It is in our DNA. I spent 9 years teaching and researching abstract math then moved to the VC industry, being an entrepreneur for a short time in between. But this gave me the sense that there was something important to take from the research world.“At Elaia, we believe that the challenges that we are facing like the digitization of the world, climate change, or health issues can be solved by doing difficult things based on human knowledge and frontier knowledge. There is a lot of value to be created by backing research-based or research-linked companies.“Also, we started in Paris, the center of the world for starting a fashion brand or a wine or cheese business, but not quite the center of the technology world. That’s Silicon Valley or China where the usage is defined. We found that the strengths of the country are more in education and the skills of the people. Therefore, Europe had a better chance at competing in deep tech than in regular tech.“The majority of our investments are in software, AI, blockchain, and quantum computing, and we are now expanding to biotech, life sciences, and energy.” &nbsp;<h2>What are the business opportunities for deep tech in 2023$4</h2>“For the past few years, we’ve noticed a huge need in healthcare for medical devices and drug discovery, especially related to data and AI. Also, everything linked to digital and life sciences is becoming big and we are heavily investing in that.&nbsp;“Cybersecurity, which 10 years ago was considered only an engineering subject, has been getting more involved in deep tech. In 2017, we saw a big part of deep tech added to the field – one of the biggest algorithms ever built – and thought it would be good enough forever. Yet between the advances in quantum computing and AI, it is not enough. Things like cloud immigration or personal devices need to be addressed with deep tech.&nbsp;“We are also seeing some interesting things happening in the industry of information. There are a lot more investments in microbiology and biotech companies that are using a new generation of concepts to speed up the cycle and create new ideas.” &nbsp;<h2>What about in 10 years$5</h2>“What will be interesting to see are the trends in biotech and industry. These are starting to become platforms themselves, which are either labs or silica-based approaches, and could shorten the cycle between studying the science behind an idea and proving that it could be a viable company. This is something that deep tech is getting better at, shortening the cycles before going to market.“It will be very interesting to see the progress that deep tech startups will make towards quicker market access. We will see a wave of new companies that are capitalizing on the fact that they can act on their ideas quicker and be more efficient in euros spent.”&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2>Outlook on the industry</h2>With the number of investments in deep tech startups growing, research and development in the sector are becoming more robust. These startups are tackling huge societal problems, but there is strength in numbers. Researchers from&nbsp;<a href="https://openocean.pubpub.org/">Open Ocean</a>, a non-profit research organization, decided to create just that: a new baseline image training set, optimized to accelerate the development of modern, intelligent, automated analysis of underwater imagery.In 2021, they released&nbsp;<a href="https://fathomnet.org/fathomnet/#/">FathomNet</a>, an open-source image database that can be used to enable artificial intelligence in the ocean to deal with large volumes of marine data. Over 84,000 images, like the one above, have annotated boxes that can “teach” machine learning algorithms what to search for.&nbsp; &nbsp;From avoiding food waste, improving the circular economy, making discoveries on the sea floor, and much more, the uses of artificial intelligence are numerous. Notifications on your wrist, a connected fitness trainer, a sleep tracker, and a health monitor all without having to get your phone out$4 Get us one too! Does knowing all the facts and stats without a doctor help us understand our health, or harm our well-being? Or, is it the new way to get patients more engaged in their own health? &nbsp;<h2>Life-saving or stress-inducing?</h2>Jared got a smartwatch as a gift from his kids last year. Besides tracking his occasional run and receiving text messages, he doesn’t think much about it. But, after receiving a notification from his watch that tracked a strange heartbeat, he called his cardiologist. The doctor diagnosed Jared with AFib, an irregular heart rhythm that increases the likelihood of blood clots and stroke. Without the data from his smartwatch, the doctor wouldn’t have been able to detect this irregularity on the spot. Jared’s smartwatch might have just saved his life.&nbsp;Laura is another wearable user. She uses her smartwatch to track everything in her life: her steps, sleep, water and food intake, workouts, and more. Noticing one day that her heart rate was lower than average, she went into the emergency room immediately, hoping it wasn’t a sign of a heart attack. After a check-up, the doctor explained that her heart rate was still normal for her age and didn’t have anything to worry about. As quickly as Laura’s anxiety spiked, she was relieved and was able to go on with her daily life as she left the office.While wearables can help users like Jared to diagnose a problem, there are also users like Laura that focus too much on data, and without a doctor can misinterpret readings, which can lead to unnecessary doctor visits and a lot of stress.“In the proper context, technology can be liberating, workflow-enhancing, and life-saving,” explained Howard Luks, MD, to&nbsp;<a href="https://thescript.zocdoc.com/technology-hurts-healthcare/">The Script</a>. “But all too often, the context is different where the digital data we have is not combined with the verbal information we get about how the condition is actually affecting the patient. As a result, we treat numbers or MRI findings, not people.” &nbsp;<h2>A gamified fitness experience</h2>“If you take a brisk walk for 13 minutes, you’ll close your rings today.”&nbsp;“Work out one more time this week, to earn the 7/7 badge.”&nbsp;Having a personal fitness trainer on your wrist means that it is always with you, and constantly pushing you to do more. The gamification of fitness through wearables gets users more involved in tracking their progress but is that extra lap really helpful to our health?Liz Joy, a sports medicine specialist and senior medical director of wellness and nutrition&nbsp;<a href="https://www.theverge.com/22733073/smartwatch-wearable-health-impact-doctors">says</a> otherwise.&nbsp;“[Patients] say, ‘I try to get 10,000 steps a day.’ And I’ll ask them where they think that recommendation came from, and nine times out of 10, they have no idea,” she says.&nbsp;“There’s nothing wrong with getting 10,000 steps, it’s just that they don’t need that many to get health benefits.”The 10,000 steps a day was more of a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/07/06/well/move/10000-steps-health.html">marketing</a> message than a health fact rooted in science.&nbsp; &nbsp;<h2>A positive way to get involved</h2>What about you? We picked the brains of our own VivaTech community for their thoughts on health and wearables. In our online poll, we asked: “Are wearables (e.g., smart watches) a positive or negative technological development in monitoring our health?”Overall, most respondents, 57%, think that wearable technology is a helpful development in monitoring our health, while 30% think it’s a mix of both helpful and harmful. Only 5% thought it was harmful, and 8% said it was neither.While the technology of wearables isn’t a cure-all, it does allow users to get more involved in their wellness. According to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.insiderintelligence.com/insights/wearable-technology-healthcare-medical-devices/">research</a> from Insider Intelligence, more than 80% of consumers are willing to wear fitness technology in 2022.&nbsp;With wearable popularity on the rise, so are the benefits we can reap. Wearables can be a tool to promote proactive health and let users gain a feeling of control over their health. Wearable data can help doctors detect a problem or disease early on, which in turn can decrease treatment costs. Insurance companies&nbsp;<a href="https://www.insiderintelligence.com/insights/wearable-technology-healthcare-medical-devices/">could even lessen</a> rising costs for patients using wearables since “the technology incentivizes behavior that reduces hospital visits and readmissions due to poorly managed personal health,” according to Insider Intelligence. &nbsp;<h2>Focus on innovation</h2>Wearable technology had a rocky start in the healthcare industry, but is slowly becoming more accurate and useful in the right context.
