About Me

Siddhi Pal (she/her) is a Senior Policy Researcher at interface, where she leads research on AI & Labour Markets in Europe with a focus on inclusion and global talent flows. With degrees in Public Policy and Social Psychology from the University of Oxford and the London School of Economics, she previously served as a Policy Advisor at the UK's Department for Science, Innovation & Technology, where she developed strategies to address the advanced digital skills gap. Her commitment to addressing inequalities began at the age of 14, when she co-founded India's first school-level Gay-Straight Alliance, later establishing her own NGO and leading programs for the UN Foundation's Girl Up initiative, where she equipped over 22,000 youth leaders across 200+ cities in India with the tools to scale up their impact.

The New York Times Debate: Is AI the New Plastic?

Remember when plastic was everything? The golden ticket to cheaper manufacturing, maximum profit and easier living? Turns out the saying is true: Nothing comes without a price; and the world has paid its weight, now, in environmental devastation and a plastic island the size of a small continent floating around the Pacific. Some argue that the same will be true of artificial intelligence. It has been hailed as the most transformative technology since the internet, and could have huge benefits for battling climate change, industries, government and more. But concerns are piling up. The amount of energy required to build AI is already harming the planet more than helping it and big questions are being asking about its potential impact on society and ethical concerns. Will the benefits of AI outweigh its costs?
