There’s a new set of tech unicorns on the horizon. Here is our 2024 Top 100 Next Unicorns list.

TOP100SCALEUPS@2x (2222).png Published every year in partnership with GP Bullhound, VivaTech’s Top 100 Next Unicorns List highlights European scale-ups that may soon become tech unicorns, or companies valued at billion.

This year’s unicorns are taken from a pool from 16 countries with the three leading countries being the UK, France, and Germany. AI is leading the game as one of the top sectors in the field, accompanied by Saas and digital media.

Up to now, about one-third of the businesses that were listed on the VivaTech Top 100 Next Unicorn lists for 2019–2023 have already achieved unicorn status. We can recall Pennylane, last year's winner in the FinTech category, which achieved unicorn status this year.

In the tech sector, unicorns have a great responsibility and they serve as excellent sources of ideas for new initiatives, draw capital and investment to untapped markets, and open doors for mergers and acquisitions for the tech sector.

AI is here to stay

Artificial intelligence has made a sensational entry to the ranking this year, proving it is no longer a deeptech, but an essential tool across all sectors. With the novelty still growing, AI offers a unique opportunity to potential unicorns, with a big focus on sustainability and innovation.

A few of the scale-ups that have caught our eye this year: Dixa, from Denmark, has created a conversational customer service platform that combines powerful AI with a human touch. Rossum, a UK-based scaleup, is a cloud-native, AI-first technology that will fully automate transactional document workflow. Musixmatch, from Italy, is the world’s leading music data company, using AI to enrich music experiences.

FemTech Revolution

Femtech this year is an industry with potential, with venture capital investment in the healthtech sector projected to exceed $1 billion by 2022. Despite representing only 2% of total investments, femtech businesses surpassed 8 billion in value in 2023, indicating rapid growth and promise in this market. Flo Health valued at 800M, is the first femtech in our Top 100.

Sustainable Giants

Another notable stat in this year’s top 100 list, the average funds raised by each of these scaleups is 170 million euros compared to 166 million in 2022. Proof that while total investments in the ecosystem were down in 2023, the growth was still there for promising businesses.

The AI industry, which makes its debut in our top 3, is undoubtedly the sector to watch this year, as femtech is starting its transformation in the tech ecosystem. We’re looking forward to seeing how these soon-icorns of Europe will spur innovation and open up new doors.
